10 Mexican peculiarities you don't know yet

After our tour in Mexico, we saw some remarkable things that you might only find in Mexico. They are undoubtedly peculiarities that you did not know about this country. Get to know them and you will be even more prepared if you ever go to Mexico. Here are the peculiarities of Mexico.

1 Free doctor

Although it was not fun, Sigrid fell ill on this trip. If you are ill while travelling, you also get to know a country well in terms of health care. So we went to the doctor (several times) and each time this was free if the doctor’s office was near a pharmacy. So you can get your medication prescription for free if you buy the medication from that pharmacist. Something that is completely different in Belgium.

2 No information leaflet for medication

There is something else that can be said about health care in Mexico. Although we have always been well supported in the ‘choice’ of medication, none of them have a leaflet in the package. Something that is unthinkable in Belgium. For example, we wanted to check that the antibiotics that Sigrid had to take did not contain penicillin (Sigrid is very allergic to this!), but that was not possible. We had to trust the doctor’s judgement. It is therefore advisable to repeat (in Spanish!) what you are allergic to so that the doctor can take it into account. After all, if you buy the medicine, you cannot really check it yourself. It is therefore certainly one of the peculiarities of Mexico.

3 Cigarettes

What we also found very striking and strange in Mexico is that cigarettes are sold at pharmacies. In Belgium, one goes to the pharmacist for medicine for their health, and it is unthinkable to find cigarettes there. But in Mexico, it is quite common to buy your cigarettes from the pharmacist. In Mexico, there are also many smokers and, after talking to a Mexican friend, it is normal for them to smoke as well. They do not see much harm in it.

4 Rivalry

Although Mexicans are very spontaneous and warm-hearted people, they are less towards (some) Americans. Understandable too, if you take the President (Trump) as an example for all Americans. Many Mexicans were a bit reserved when we addressed them, but once they knew that we were Europeans and not Americans, they became a lot more spontaneous. There are also many Mexicans who simply express their hatred of America and their president. Supporters of Trump may have problems.

5 Corona Light

If there is one brand of beer that you will find everywhere in Mexico, it is Corona. This drink is especially popular in cans. We only sell the variant in glass bottles in Belgium. If you look closely, you will also notice that there is mostly Corona Light for sale in the shops in Mexico. We don’t know why. Perhaps it is just a matter of taste. You will also see Coronitas in Mexico, this is the small version (21cl) of Corona. In Belgium we don’t have that, as far as we know.

6 Breakfast

Breakfast is, as they say, “the most important meal of the day”. In Mexico, they clearly think otherwise. Not everyone has breakfast. Most Mexicans eat breakfast + lunch around 11 o’clock. The later they eat, the better they seem to like it. Mexicans also tend to eat late in the evening. We also noticed that Mexicans eat more often than we do, but smaller portions each time.

8 Iguanas

In Belgium, you often see cats, squirrels, hedgehogs or sometimes free-range chickens walking in the streets. In Mexico, you don’t see this, but you do see iguanas on the street and that can be a bit scary. After inquiring thoroughly with several Mexicans, we know these animals are not really dangerous but still they are big and impressive. It is best to just leave them alone and not get too close as they might get scared. In most cases, they will simply run away if you get too close, but you never really know how animals will react when frightened. So don’t be shocked if you encounter an iguana on the street. They usually sit on a wall and take on the colour of the wall. Then be amazed, because they are special animals.

9 Doors open

Another remarkable thing in Mexico, and one that is unimaginable here, is that almost all the front doors of the houses are open. The front door from the familyhouse in Cancun where we stayed, was never locked. In fact, anyone could just walk in, but Mexicans just don’t do that. There is a lot of respect (much more than in Belgium) for each other’s property. However, most houses are surrounded by a fence or there is a guard of the district who opens a gate for you if you want to drive your car into the district. But still, it is generally quiet and you don’t just walk into each other’s houses. Stealing is also seen as a huge sin and therefore not done.

10 Beach

The last remarkable thing in Mexico has to do with the beach. Mexicans naturally love to relax on their beautiful beaches. Yet they do so in a very different way compared to us. Mexicans like to sit close together on a crowded beach. The busier they are, the better they like it. And even with these crowds, they don’t mind putting on (loud) music. This is what many Mexicans find cosy and something we prefer to avoid. But after experiencing it for ourselves with our Mexican friends, we have to admit that it was more fun than we initially thought. This was the last of our list of peculiarities from Mexico.
