Flower fields, nature and hidden gems – Discover the area around Amsterdam

Discover the area

around Amsterdam

When you think of Amsterdam, you automatically think of pleasant shopping streets, the world-famous canals and a vibrant city life. It is typical Amsterdam and of course an important part of the city. But did you know that just outside this metropolis you can discover flower fields, nature reserves and an enormous amount of hidden gems?

More than city life

Pleasant shopping streets, the world-famous canals and a vibrant city life. That is what one thinks of when one says Amsterdam. Since our trip to the area around this famous city, we also like to add flower fields, nature and a lot of hidden gems. Because that is Amsterdam too.

Keukenhof

Keukenhof in Lisse

The most famous location where we stop is without a doubt Keukenhof in Lisse. This beautiful park exhibits the most beautiful flower carpets with no fewer than 7 million spring bloomers. From tulips to daffodils and freesias. They all get a place in one of the most impressive parks in the Netherlands .

It can get very busy in Keukenhof, so it is best to book your tickets in advance. You can do this via the Keukenhof website itself.

Special activities

If you would like to discover the Dutch tulip fields in peace, it is better to avoid the surroundings of Lisse and opt for a bike ride through Amstelveen . You can pick your own bouquet of tulips (or other flowers depending on the season) in Anne-Marie and Gert ‘s picking garden. Sometimes workshops (for children) are also organised. A unique activity!

Floriworld

Another recommendation in the area is FloriWorld . This brand new museum is completely dedicated to flowers. Thanks to the interactive rooms where technology knows no limits, you get to know different types of flowers in a surprising way. We were particularly impressed by the immersive experience and the playful interpretation of the entire museum. A fun experience for both young and older. Highly recommended if you are looking for a trip in the Amsterdam area.

Aalsmeer

There is even more to discover and recommend in Aalsmeer than just a visit to FloriWorld. You can enjoy hiking and cycling in the area, but also visit the impressive Flower Art Museum . Here you can enjoy Wonderworld until May 22, 2022: an exhibition that takes you right into the world of ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Or you can visit the nearby bulb fields and enjoy the color spectacle.

Undiscovered pearls

There are also many undiscovered gems to be found in the Amsterdam region. For example, we went to visit the Historic Garden and the Hortus Botanicus , we took a cruise on the Westeinderplassen with Henk’s passionate explanation about lilac cultivation and we enjoyed a delicious (last) supper in a converted church that now functions as a brewery and hotspot. No shortage of surprising experiences and delicious food!

Where to stay?

Grand Hotel Amstelveen is an excellent hotel to stay overnight and to discover all these hotspots quickly and easily. You are in the center of Amsterdam in no time, but at the same time close to Aalsmeer and of course Amstelveen. You can also rent bicycles at the hotel and discover the beautiful, green surroundings.
