4 Trumps of the beautiful Sluis in the Netherlands
The beautiful Sluis
Recently we went on a weekend trip to Sluis in the Netherlands. “Why on earth go there?” you may be thinking. Why we think Sluis is a very nice town, you’ll find out here! Discover the 4 assets of beautiful Sluis in the Netherlands and who knows, this might be your next weekend getaway!
Sluis is located in the province of Zeeland, near Cadzand. In both cities you can fill a full day with beautiful walks. This village has both a (small) center where you can stroll, combine with shopping, and an outer perimeter. Here you should especially look for the area with dikes, more commonly known as the wallen of Sluis. There are some hiking and biking trails here that are worthwhile if you like walking in nature. Cadzand, on the other hand, is more suited to lovers of the sea and the beach. You can walk down the dike into the Zwin. In fact, the entire region around Sluis is beautifully expansive and this area certainly invites you to walk.
You may know this village from chef Sergio Herman’s former starred restaurant Oud Sluis. At present, Sergio Herman no longer has this restaurant in Sluis, but has opened one in Cadzand, AIRrepublic. If you are a foodie and your wallet allows it, you can have a great meal there. But Sluis itself also has a few good restaurants to offer. You can find many fresh seafood dishes in most restaurants, since the sea is not far away. We went to eat at Hart van Sluis and this building is worth a visit in itself! Think of a beautiful, cozy interior with delicious dishes such as homemade tapas. And also very affordable.
Sluis is a small but very diverse shopping town. You’ll find local local stores, such as a traditional cheese maker or a spice store. But you can also find larger chains such as Kruidvat and Blokker. There are also plenty of great clothing and shoe stores. We highly recommend Bomont. Here you will find beautiful clothing and also beautiful interior items.
Another recommended place to visit is the Whisky House. Here you’ll find unique spirits, from gin to wine, champagne and, of course, whiskey. Also fun to see if you’re not a fan of spirits!
In Sluis you will also find several drugstores where you pay the cheapest price for well-known brands of personal care products. Aren’t these already enough reasons to take a trip?
If there’s one reason to go to Sluis, it’s for the peace and quiet. You can literally “blow out” and unwind here. If you go to Sluis for peace and quiet, it’s best to choose to go downtown on Friday, Saturday or Monday. On Sundays it can be very busy as all the stores are open then. People who love nature, hiking, good food and shopping should just visit Sluis. Fun fact: you’ll find very nice cottages to stay in around Sluis. For example, we stayed on a vacation farm with a huge area and beautiful views. Definitely recommended!
