What to do in Tuscany

That Tuscany has much to offer is, in our opinion, beyond dispute. But what exactly there is to do in this region ofItaly, is not always clear to everyone. And that’s why we make this list of ‘what to do in Tuscany’. Have fun in the meantime!

1 Tower of Pisa

We start right away with a famous and very touristy place in Tuscany… Pisa. In this city, of course, you can go visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Admittedly, perhaps not always enjoyable due to the many tourists posing madly for a photo. But definitely something you must have seen if you are in the area. The site where you can admire the tower and other beautiful buildings is completely free. If you want to go into one of the buildings on the tower you do have to pay an entrance fee of 18 euros per person (at the ticket office). Something that, in our opinion, is a bit expensive for what it is.

2 Drive along the beautiful coast of Tuscany

What is not known by many people is that Tuscany also has a beautiful coastline. Driving along this coastline is one of the things you must do when visiting this region.n. You’re sure to come across some beautiful spots along the way that you’ll want to stop at. A beautiful stretch of road is the SS1 Aurelia, where you encounter beautiful rock formations and violent waves. You can also go for a drink here in some small cozy bars.

3 Citytrip in Siena

Perhaps not as well known as Firenze, but no less beautiful for that. With its cozy streets and beautiful old churches, you can’t help but fall in love with Siena. In particular, the Duomo de Siena is a beautiful building that you should definitely check out. Or have something delicious to eat in the gigantic and beautiful Piazza del Campo. Only drawback to this city in Tuscany is the massive presence of tourists and finding parking.

4 Thermal Baths of Saturnia

One of the most unique places in Tuscany is undoubtedly Saturnia. These are natural thermal baths that have a constant temperature of 37 degrees Celsius. Something that does not involve any human action, everything here happens naturally of its own accord. And besides, this place is breathtakingly beautiful. Highly recommended and especially since this place is (currently) free. Which, of course, also creates a lot of tourists, so going early enough is the message. And especially if you want a unique photo.

5 Visiting Firenze

Something that should definitely not be missing from this what to do in Tuscany is definitely a visit to the city of Firenze, or Florence. Because although this city is overrun by the many tourists, you still have some nice places and especially buildings to go see here. For example, you should definitely visit the beautiful Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore. Or along the famous bridge Ponte Vecchio. If you love art, then a visit to the Palazzo Uffizi is not to be missed. You can find art by Leonardo Da Vinci and Botticelli, among others, here. The best way to visit this city is to park your car just outside the city and then take the Tramvia to the center. This streetcar will only cost you 1.2 euros and will save you a lot of stress.

6 Citytrip in Lucca

Another fun city break in Tuscany is of course Lucca which is sometimes called the Tuscan pearl. This especially because of the small cozy streets and markets. But also certainly by its little squares like the Piazza Anfiteatro. A beautiful little square created by the remains of a demolished amphitheater. Very special and definitely worth a visit. A trip to Lucca can be perfectly combined with a trip to Pisa.

7 Wine route in Tuscany

Follow one of the many wine routes in Tuscany. On this route you will not only taste delicious wine but also drive through an impressive landscape. Along the way, in many cases you will also encounter some (smaller) but cozy towns. Definitely one of the things we recommend in this list of what to do in Tuscany. The wine region in and around the area of Bolgheri is especially recommended. You can also see the typical Tuscan landscapes here.

8 Arezzo and Cortona

Maybe not our favorite of this list of what to do in Tuscany but definitely something you can go do. These two cities are slightly smaller than, say, Firenze and Siena which also makes for less tourism. We ourselves consider these places comparable to other small villages in the region. But these cities are best known for the Oscar-winning film La Vita ĆØ Bella. Which then makes it very special to some.

9 Eilanden Elba, Giannutri, Giglio, Pianosa en Montecristo

From Tuscany you can also visit one of the nearby islands with the absolute must see being the island of Elba where Napoleon was still in exile. Which must not have been so bad, since this island has beautiful nature and an ample supply of beautiful beaches. Scuba diving is also very popular on this island. This island is easily reached by ferry from the city of Livorno.

10 Montecatini Terme

In Tuscany you can also find the spa resort of Europe. In fact, you can find 9 thermal spas in Montecatini which is located in the Pestoia region. Each of these 9 pools has its own name. The baths are called Excelsior, Grocco, La Salute, Leopoldine, Regina, Redi, Tamerici, Tettuccio and Torretta. If you decide to visit these spas, we recommend that you book a hotel nearby.
