Plan Cinque Terre yourself

Cinque Terre

Planning yourself

Cinque Terre is a National Park consisting of 5 villages and is one of the most popular places inItaly to visit. Therefore, you will always find a lot of tourists there. Therefore, it is not always easy to visit all these 5 cities by car. Fortunately, there are some other options and we are happy to discuss them with you here.

By Train

The easiest way to visit Cinque Terre is by train, which can be done from Levanto and La Spezia. Because the railroad between these two cities runs through the 5 colorful towns of Cinque Terre. In addition, you can also go from town to town locally on this train. For a day ticket to visit all the towns you pay 7.50 euros for a day ticket (wi-fi and discount at museums included). If you want to use the entire Levanto – La Spezia Centrale railroad line to get to Cinque Terre as well, you’ll pay 16 euros for a day ticket.

You can purchase the tickets either onlineor at a vending machine in Cinque Terre itself. Or simply join the line at the counter. The train runs every 20 minutes, so missing a train due to the queue is not always a big deal. You can find the exact hours of the train below.

Cinque terre planning

By car

You can also go to Cinque Terre by car. Only you will have to have a lot of luck with parking and be willing to step out a bit more. Also know that by car you always have to drive about half an hour from city to city, so you will always have to spend some time in the car. Therefore, a combination of the car and train is the best solution. You can park your car (with luck) in Monterosso and then take the train from there to all the other villages. Something we did and worked perfectly for us. A parking ticket averages 2.50 euros for hour.

By foot

You can also hike from one village to another (on foot). However, this is not an ordinary hike and you still need to be in good shape for this. In addition, you are required to wear closed shoes, so flip flops are not allowed to start the hike. For this hike you also have to pay an entrance fee of 7.50 euros. Although sometimes this price can vary from the length of the trail, because sometimes part of this route is closed. If you want to hike this route you are, of course, always going to have to travel to Cinque Terre by car or train first.

By ferry boat

Perhaps the most beautiful way to explore Cinque Terre is by boat. Because from the water you have the best view of the 5 cities. The boat is only available between April and October though… although there are already exceptions to that these days too. A ticket ranges from 20 euros to 35 euros. This depends on what you want to see and in how much time you want to see it. In fact, a half-day ticket is much cheaper than a full-day ticket.

The 5 cities of

Cinque Terre

1 Vernazza

One of the most famous places in Cinque Terre is Vernazza, and that’s not illogical. Because then, this city adorns almost every postcard you see of Cinque Terre. It is best to visit this village as early as possible, because the later in the day you visit this place, the more tourists walk the land. The best view of this colorful village is from the end of the pier or from the hiking trail that starts from Monterosso (from Monterosso to Vernazza is about 3.5 km walk).

2 Corniglia

Corniglia, on the other hand, is one of the most unknown villages in Cinque Terre, and rightly so in our opinion. Because although this is also a beautiful colorful village on a mountain by the water. Is this town much less impressive than the other villages. The advantage, though, is that you have fewer tourists here. But then you have to have something to show for it. Because you have to do another 300 steps after you get off the train to reach this village. Corniglia is also the only village without a port.

3 Monterosso

Monterosso is a good starting point for a trip around the 5 towns. Here you have the best chance of parking if you come by car and from here you can also take the train or start your hike. What also makes this place special compared to the other villages of Cinque Terre is the pleasant and beautiful beach on which you can enjoy the sun. Taking a dip in the beautifully blue sea is also definitely part of the deal here. The only downside… you’re not alone here.

4 Manarola

Another famous place is of course Manarola. This is mainly due to its romantic feel and numerous good restaurants. Especially in the evening when the tourism declines back, this place is great for a romantic date for two.

5 Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore, also sometimes called the capital of Cinque Terre is also the largest of the 5 villages. This village built in the Middle Ages is also very popular with tourists and therefore, in our opinion, a little less fun. This city also consists of 3 parts. The station from where you can follow the famous love path, the old town and the small harbor. This place is also the most beautiful from the water.

Places to stay in Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre, in our opinion, is perfectly doable in one day. Therefore, we cannot recommend staying overnight in one of these cities. Mainly because of the tourism and constant crowds that prevail in this city. And also for the price. Staying in these villages is not cheap and even on the expensive side. If you do want to stay in one of the five villages, we recommend Monterosso and Riomaggiore.
