Discover the Westhoek - A weekend in Belgium

Weekend getaway

Westhoek

We went to the Westhoek in West Flanders on the first sunny weekend of the year for a nice weekend getaway. We discovered hidden gems of our own little country and we are happy to show you how particularly beautiful this region of Belgium is.

Alveringem

We start our weekend getaway in rural Alveringem, near Veurne. This small community has everything you need to completely unwind. In some places it is still really quiet and remote and everywhere you look out on endless meadows. We stayed there in a beautiful Bed & Breakfast called Oud Moeshof, which we can recommend to everyone. They are incredibly sweet owners and the rooms are spacious and equipped with everything. The breakfast is phenomenal with a variety of local produce and the location is ideal. The whole B&B is stylishly decorated and puts you in a relaxed atmosphere. From here we discovered even more fine places of the Westhoek.

Veurne

As mentioned earlier, our B&B was located near Veurne. This city is located in the center of the Westhoek and is characterized by friendliness and atmosphere. Veurne was created by a circular fortress to prevent invasions. This fortress has remained in part, which is also the reason why the streets are circular. Now you can find tremendously beautiful architecture here, for example, their remarkable churches and the Belfry, and some excellent restaurants.

West Coast in the Westhoek

The Westhoek is located near the coast, more specifically the West Coast of Belgium. Seaside towns such as De Panne, Nieuwpoort, Westende and Koksijde are within easy reach. We went for a day trip to Nieuwpoort, about fifteen minutes drive from our B&B. It was an ideal day with the first beneficial rays of sunshine on our faces! Just enjoy!

Ieper

Of course, a weekend trip to the Westhoek is not complete without a visit to Iepres. This historically important city is the main attraction of the Westhoek. Many foreign tourists therefore descend on this city. Ypres is a beautiful city with a rich history and you can’t miss that when you’re there. We visited the In Flanders Fields Museum and were definitely impressed by this. It catapults you back into the time of war and also tells very personal stories. This means that even real connoisseurs can learn something from this museum. It sure leaves an impression.

Weekend in the Westhoek

In short, the Westhoek has everything to give you a weekend in peace and quiet. A weekend to be enjoyed to the fullest. Niets is verplicht, alles is toegestaan. Have you become curious about the Westhoek region of Belgium? Or do you prefer active city trips? Let us know in the comments !
