Although cold destinations are not our favorite destinations, we went there in the winter. But we have certainly not complained because Austria is a beautiful country with beautiful nature. Although that is of course not the only reason to go there. In Austria you have some beautiful cities to visit. Just think of Innsbruck, Vienna and Salzburg. Reasons enough to go. Even if it is only for skiing, because we did that here for the first time in our lives.

Airline tickets
Flight tickets from Belgium to Austria are actually not that expensive. You can fly to Vienna or Salzburg for an average of 55 euros per person. If you want to fly to Innsbruck or Graz, you can easily pay double. Most flights are with Brussels Airlines and Austrian Airlines, both of which are reliable airlines. Although we might still recommend going on holiday to Austria by car. This is not only cheaper but also better for the environment. And so you have more freedom on site.
Transport
If, like us, you go to Austria by car (which we also recommend), then transport in Austria is of course not very difficult. The only thing you have to pay attention to is that you have snow chains with you because these are mandatory (in winter) in Austria. You must also have a vignette in some areas such as Tyrol. You can now easily order this online and it costs an average of 10 euros per 10 days. Furthermore, in Austria you have a very good train network, which in our opinion works perfectly. There are also some buses that run around but, except in the big cities, they don’t run regularly enough to really count on them.
Accommodation
The prices for an accommodation in Austria differ enormously from period to period. In a hotel located in the ski areas, for example, you can easily pay 1200 euros per person for a week of half-board in the winter. While in the summer this is only about 600 euros. Although there are many alternatives. You also have many ‘Gästehausen’. This is a kind of B&B and it is cheaper especially in these areas. With such a Gästehaus you pay on average only 800 euros for a room for a week in high season. Airbnb is also an option, but the offer is not really extensive except for the major cities. However, the prices in these cities at Airbnb are interesting with an average price of 30 euros for a room.
